Phone Zombies

Started by: MrsC (91)

They film everything now . The poor chap killed on the motorway yesterday is the latest grim example . The Queen's funeral another .
They probably do it automatically , without thought . They've become almost like a sixth sense , an extension of our consciousness.
What beats me is when people go to a live performance , say Glastonbury e.g. then watch the thing through the lens of the phone .
Some folks can't function without them . They must have it with them .
It's a form of mental illness . I chucked mine away years ago .

Tv news are the worst they have journalist and

The other day in the news a chap was drowning and all the people nearby wanted a selfie. A girl was being beat up by two girls on a train and no one stepped in to help but videoed it happening

Anyone filming people in distress without helping should be arrested and their phones be smashed to smithereens. They seem to be totally dependant on looking at them constantly, even when people go out for a meal, instead of chatting, they're all just gawping into their phones. Sorry, I could go on, but I won't.

I agree with MrsC's comment. These people seem to have been de-sensitised, probably or partially due to them watching violent video games, and they becoming the "norm". I've said the same thing for years and too many young people walk around with headphones on and staring into their phones, totally oblivious to their surroundings.

There have been many times where such folk step into the road right in front of me, and haven't even been aware that I had to brake hard to miss them.

Like MrsC, I got rid of my mobile years ago as well.

Mollie M I have a mobile phone and that is what it is used for phone calls cheaper to use than the house phone. A lot of these new phones are cameras with phones attached and some cost hundreds if not into 4 figures to buy

Peter, you are a Ludite smart fones are more than just a fone, they do anything and everything and, you can get an ' out of date' iphone for cheap on amazon/ebay or from a pornshop ( I hope I spelt that right) for cheap and get a Talktalk monthly account for less than a fiver, then a new and wonderful world opens and you spend all day midering the grandkids to come and show you how to order your beer from Bartons, Yea I know you can walk that far but,,,,walking is unacceptable in 2023,

Tom:

You mean PAWN shop!

Peter: I very rarely use my landline as it's mainly there for if somebody wants to phone me. I don't chat on the phone, nor make appointments. I email chatty stuff mostly, or go online to do other things. I do keep the phone there for emergencies, like if I need an ambulance or something, so a mobile is unnecessary for me.

The medical term for mobile phone addiction is Nomophobia and constant looking at one is bad for your eyesight and also can cause stress and other medical problems

Tom this luddite has a smart phone I am on PAYG with a O2 classic sim card (You cannot get one now) calls 3p a minute text 2p and data 1p per minute, you must top up by £10 inside 6 months or loss your number. Occasionally I text to one of my mates who is nearly deaf so it is easier to use text. I take the odd photo and use WhatsApp to send them . Things like google maps/sat nav/radio /calendar/google play store/g-mail/news/you-tube are disabled. Our car has built in maps and Bluetooth for using the phone on the move with hand controls on the steering wheel .So not quite a luddite I am not a person to walk around with my phone in one hand and the designer coffee in the other. Yvonne's phone is a flip phone and now resides in a draw in the kitchen

It could all change in the future the technology is moving very fast not many can keep up with it, I think it would help if we were learned how to use it , I learned off my children ,and pick it up has I go along

Surfer tom we do not have any family on our door step to teach us. Last year we got a new car(motability) NO instruction book supplied with it. This year we got a new TV a smart free view play and again no instructions and how to use it. Again last year I applied for a course about computers at Wigan library never got any word back apart from being registered now due to my missus being house bound could not go even if I wanted to. Its ok for a 7 yr old being taught using modern technology but what about the thousands of older people who are being left behind

Counted a least a dozen yesterday walking along the pavements instead of not watching where they were going, some pushing prams and not watching the kids not in the prams.

Time that law was introduced to ban it like in some other countries.

Handsomeminer:

I'm sure that's not what th'Owd Codger meant.

I once saw a woman who was pushing her buggy with her stomach whilst yapping on her phone in one hand, a cig in the other hand, and a 3/4 year old kiddy walking on his own at the side of her. Anything could have happened.

It would seem to me that many people are totally dependent on their mobiles and can barely function without them. Obviously, they're a good tool for the right reasons though.
